PotPot is a table lamp design proposal, combining simple aesthetics with innovative functionality.
The lamp is turned on by physical removal of the cover, creating a relationship between the operator and the lighting through the requirement of physical action; you almost want to give it a name as if it were a pet. Lighting is “hiding” in the structure, until it is revealed/set free by the operator, somewhat reminiscent of the Schrödinger cat principle. Yet the light is triggered on and off by the removal of the top part, where disconnecting the two pieces turns the light on, saving battery when the lid is on. The bottom and top of the piece are complementary in geometry, so the top can serve as a stand for the light when in use, also supplementing the satisfactory feeling of complementarity and good fitting. This complementarity is further supported by the “click” feeling due to magnets placed within each of the two pieces, also to simultaneously improve the stability. The charging is wireless from the bottom, to enable clean aesthetics of the piece as a whole, without any openings. The expected use of the lamp is wide, ranging from bedside tables to restaurant tables. The original piece is 12 centimeters in diameter for ease of lid removal, but can also be upscaled to be used as floorlamp of 40cm in diameter.
