Jellyfish play an important role in Denmark’s marine ecosystem, contributing to the health of the waters. They serve as key indicators of environmental conditions and help maintain the balance of marine ecosystems. One fascinating aspect of jellyfish is their ability to glow in the dark, a phenomenon known as bioluminescence. This unique trait not only adds an enchanting visual dimension to Denmark’s coastal waters but also serves various ecological purposes. The bioluminescence of jellyfish can act as a form of communication, attracting mates or deterring potential predators. It might also be contributing to biodiversity, as some fish species can be attracted to the light emitted by jellyfish and follow them. Jellyfish populations can be indicative of changes in water temperature, nutrient levels, and overall ecosystem health. Monitoring their numbers provides valuable insights into the actual state of Denmark’s marine environment and helps scientists understand the impact of human activities on the oceans. Moreover, jellyfish play a role in controlling the populations of certain plankton and small fish, preventing them from overwhelming the ecosystem. Despite occasional challenges posed by jellyfish blooms (caused by sudden spikes in water temperature, possibly indicating a climate shift), such as interference with fishing activities, their presence is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of marine life. Recognizing the importance of jellyfish in Denmark’s waters emphasizes the need for sustainable practices to ensure the continued health and balance of the country’s marine ecosystems. Understanding and appreciating the role of these transparent creatures is crucial for fostering a harmonious coexistence between humans and the diverse life that inhabits Denmark’s coastal waters. If jellyfish disappear from the canals, the possibility of health-safe swimming might disappear with them.

Each boat contained a jellyfish shape made of LED strips. Jellyfish head was placed onto the boat itself and its 3D-ness was supported by a wire mesh umbrella–shaped construction. The illuminated tentacles were placed into the head and moved passively with waves. LEDs were blue coloured. The blue colour and its dynamics was supported by additional material placed onto the LEDs.
